Summary

Personal Assistant/Support Worker required for a very bright, friendly and kind disabled gentleman with a spinal injury who uses a wheelchair. 

We are looking for someone reliable, patient, honest and kind to join our team of amazing carers, who has a genuine interest in providing high quality care - and would enjoy working in a warm and friendly family environment. A sense of humour would also be appreciated! 

Duties include: help with getting in and out of bed, dressing and undressing and personal care. Coffee and chat is also important! 

Applicants need to be physically fit with an excellent level of spoken English and ideally have some experience of working with people with spinal disability, although this is not essential. 

Would best suit applicants local to Chandler's Ford/Eastleigh/Winchester/Southampton and surrounding areas with own car. 
 
Experience working in care/health required and references are essential.  

Hours/Shifts

Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays: 10.30am to 12pm & 11pm to 12.30am

Some holiday cover would also be required 

Other Requirements

Must be happy to work in a smoking environment

Must have a UK driving licence

Must have access to own vehicle

All applicants must be willing to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check

Successful applicants will be entitled to Holiday pay and will be issued employment contracts.

 

Description

Typical duties

Domestic:  

Changing bed linen

Bed making

Preparing drinks, snacks and meals.

Tidying

Making tea for the employer's guests

Any other reasonable task

Personal Care:

Washing and bathing/showering – towelling dry/ drying hair

Supervision and/or assistance with showering, drying, hair washing/ brushing as required

Assistance with applying cream

General hair/skin care

Catheter care

Dressing and undressing/ helping with buttons and fastenings

Getting into bed

Assistance with medication i.e. helping to take tablets from foil/packets

Helping with other aspects of personal care as required, for example assisting employer to get changed at swimming pool/gym. 

Getting in and out of the wheelchair ('transferring') 

Any other reasonable task

 

Person specification

The successful applicant will be: 

Able to tolerate the employer smoking in the work place

Respectful of the employer’s privacy and confidentiality

Reliable with good time-keeping

Able to both follow instructions and work on own initiative

Hygienic, tidy minded and well organised

Fit and healthy to undertake the required duties

Patience and possess excellent interpersonal skills

Honest and cheerful

Creative

Able to speak and read English to a reasonable standard

Legally permitted to work in the United Kingdom

Able to work at all times to high standards of Health & Safety

Previous experience preferred but this is not as essential as a kind and common sense approach to these roles.
