Reliable, bubbly PA/s wanted to provide care for my 14 year old daughter with Down Syndrome. Tasks include personal care, developing life skills and supporting her in participating with activities at home and in the community e.g. swimming, cinema, park and beach. Overall you will be ensuring she has fun in learning to be independent. Driver preferred but not essential as public transport is available. The successful applicants will be excellent in timekeeping and communication and have experience and empathy with working with children with special needs.

Holiday pay and employment contract will be given and you must be willing to undertake an enhanced DBS check.  


Sunday afternoons

5 hours twice a month

Occasional evenings  

Additional hours may be available by mutual agreement

Nature of the work:

The nature of the work is to provide care for my daughter in our home and in the community; to enable her to understand herself and then translate that to people around her to educate them in order to support her with her needs and all aspects of her general daily care; to nurture her confidence and independence and develop her living skills. 

Typical duties

Personal care tasks:

Maintain the safety of my daughter in our home and in the local community; this involves constant supervision.

To encourage my daughter to make decisions and take the lead when appropriate  in order to increase her confidence and life skills and not to diminish her independence

Supervise, encourage and prompt to develop toileting skills

Support, encourage and prompt her to encourage good personal hygiene

Prompt, support and encourage independence with dressing and undressing 

Oversee feeding and drinking

Follow bedtime routine

Interact, converse and engage with her and build her confidence

Reassure her and support her if she becomes anxious or upset 

Push her in her wheelchair if required for longer distances or if she is unwell

Any other task that is reasonable

Community Living Tasks:

Assist my daughter and support her to develop life skills; these will vary and develop; guidance will be provided by me

Provide my daughter with company and stimulation; ensure she has fun; entertain, stimulate and play with her 

Support her and fully participate in activities at home and in the community

Support her with communication in new situations, in new places and with new people and develop her social skills and confidence

Drive her in your vehicle to activities in the community e.g. swimming, cinema, shopping, visiting the park, Flying Fortress and beach, holiday activities ; you must have personal business insurance for your car

Develop  her experience, skills and confidence travelling on public transport

Develop my daughter’s awareness of potential risks in the home and in the community e.g. road safety and stranger awareness

Any other task that is reasonable

Other Tasks: 

You will need to manage money on outings and keep all receipts to give to the employer

Person specification

The successful applicant will:

Be able to learn and understand the disabled young child’s needs and emotions

Be honest and cheerful with a good sense of humour

Be female as personal care is involved

Be reliable with excellent timekeeping

Be able to respect privacy and confidentiality

Be able to both follow instructions and work on own initiative

Refrain from smoking while at work

Be willing to be police checked (enhanced DBS). Please note that a criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to obtaining the position

Be legally allowed to work in the UK

Be a driver with own car and full UK driving licence is preferred. You will need personal business insurance.

Experience of working with children with disabilities is essential
