About us News Get Yourself Active Independent Lives, in partnership with Disability Rights UK, is launching the Get Yourself Active project in West Sussex! We believe that it is your right as a disabled person to be active in a way that is right for you. That's why we're working with West Sussex County Council, and other key sport sector partners, to run a series of workshops for social workers to develop better opportunities for you to get involved in sport or other physical activity. We will work with social workers and brokerage teams on how Personal Budgets can be used to get active. Take a look at Get Yourself Active Why getting active is so important: There are 9.4 million disabled people in England, accounting for 18% of the population. Only 18% of disabled people in the country take part in sport at least once a week, compared to 39% of non-disabled people. According to the NHS people who do regular physical activity will enjoy: A 30% lower risk of early death Up to a 35% lower risk of coronary heart disease and stroke Up to a 50% lower risk of type 2 diabetes Up to a 50% lower risk of colon cancer Up to a 30% lower risk of depression Up to a 30% lower risk of dementia So you can see why it's so important that we're working toward involving more disabled people in sport or other physical activity. We want to look at ways in which you can use your personal budget to support your participation in the activities which work for you. However, the project is all about having choice and control over how you spend your leisure time, whether you have a personal budget or not. If you're interested in finding out more about the project, or you want to get involved, contact David Streeter at [email protected], or call on 01903 219482 extension 256.
