What is Zoom?

Zoom is an application which allows you to attend meetings over the internet if you have a microphone and/or webcam. It is available for use on your computer (a PC or a Mac) and on your smartphone.

Independent Lives will be using Zoom to interact with any customers who would prefer a virtual face to face meeting with their allocated adviser rather than a phone call or arranged meeting during the initial start-up process.

How do I join a Zoom meeting?

To join a Zoom meeting, follow the step-by-step instructions below:

1. The person who is running the meeting will send an email to your email address which will contain a link for you to join the meeting. The email will contain the text ‘Join from PC, Mac, Linux, IOS or Android’ followed by a link. This is the link you need to click to join the meeting. See below for an example.

2. After you click the link, you’ll be prompted to download and run Zoom. A file will download containing the Zoom Launcher application. You need to download and run this application to join the meeting. Simply click on the downloaded file to install the launcher.

3. Once you open the Zoom Launcher application, one of two things will happen. If the host hasn’t joined the meeting you’ll see a message which will ask you to ‘Please wait for the host to start this meeting’.

If the host has already started the meeting, the Zoom meeting window will appear. At this stage you may need to configure your audio and video settings by clicking ‘Test Computer Mic & Speakers’.

This will open your microphone and webcam settings on your computer, so you can make sure they’re configured correctly to use with Zoom.

4. Once all your settings are configured, and the meeting has started, to join the meeting via audio click ‘join audio conference by computer’. This should automatically appear on your screen when you join the meeting.

5. To connect your video, click the video camera icon in the bottom left-hand corner of the Zoom meeting window to the right-hand side of the mute button.

6. Once the meeting finishes - or if you leave the meeting before it finishes, by clicking ‘Leave meeting’ in the bottom right hand corner of the Zoom meeting window – the Zoom program will close, but the application will remain on your computer, so you do not need to download it for any future meetings.
