Independent Lives is entering an exciting period of growth and we’re looking for an experienced, values-driven leader to become our next Chair of the Board.

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead a highly committed, user-led Board and make a meaningful difference at a pivotal moment for our organisation and the communities we support across the Southern Counties.

About the role

As Chair, you will work closely with our CEO as a constructive partner, helping to shape our strategic priorities, strengthen organisational resilience and ensure our decisions always reflect our values. You will lead quarterly Board meetings, oversee good governance practice and help trustees contribute confidently to discussion, scrutiny and strategic planning.

You may also be involved in trustee recruitment, succession planning and representing Independent Lives externally when appropriate.

Our Board

Our Board is proudly user-led, with 75% of trustees having direct lived experience of disability. As Chair, you will ensure these voices remain at the heart of everything we do and that the Board operates collaboratively and inclusively.

What we’re looking for

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is passionate about empowering disabled people to have choice, control and independence
  • Has proven experience of chairing a board or leading strategic discussions
  • Thinks strategically and objectively, especially when scrutinising performance and risk
  • Values diversity and the importance of lived experience at every level
  • Communicates confidently with a wide range of people, from members to funders and partners
  • Has a strong appreciation of charity governance, finance and legal responsibilities, or is willing to develop in these areas

Personal experience of disability or caring for a disabled person is highly valued, but not essential. What matters most is your commitment to our values and to championing the voices of disabled people.

The difference you’ll make

Your leadership will directly strengthen Independent Lives’ ability to support disabled people, people with support needs and carers to live fulfilling and independent lives. You will help us grow our reach, expand our services and ensure more people receive personalised support at a time when demand is increasing across the region.

By enabling our Board to work confidently and with purpose, you will play a key part in securing our long-term sustainability and strengthening our role within the community.
