We are looking for a personal assistant for our 11 year old who has complex special needs and is blind. He can walk around with someone guiding him and talking him through what is around him and the sounds he can hear. He is learning to use a white cane. He uses a wheelchair for longer distances. He has a very good memory and creates pictures in his mind with the sounds and knowledge he has built up over the past years. He has learning needs, his speech and language skills are developing, and he enjoys a conversation and interacting with people who make him feel safe. He has a good sense of humour and can construct some great jokes.

He enjoys interaction with others, swimming, horse riding, bowling, trampolining, cooking/baking, going out on his trike with supervision. He also likes music and has a keen ear for rhythm, he likes listening to the football and is learning the rules of the game. He likes a kick around with a football. He also loves stories and is proficient at finding his way round his ipad to find what he wants to listen to.

When he does not feel safe, he feels anxious or emotions overwhelm him, he expresses this emotion in squeals or calls out if he cannot hear where people are. When he needs to move on from one task or activity to another, he needs a bit of time and understanding. We have good strategies for supporting him in feeling in control, so transitions are positive.

He needs support in physically managing personal care including dressing, bathing, toileting. He knows his routine and what he needs help with and asks. He can feed himself but needs food cut up and load up the fork. He can lift a fork to his mouth and enjoys his food.

He is diagnosed with epilepsy but has not had any fits for over a year. We have an epilepsy plan in place. We have a comprehensive guide for anyone who is involved in his care so we all provide consistency.
