Job Title: Personal Assistant

Hourly rate:  £10 per hour

Hours/shifts: 4 - 6 hours every other weekend (Days can be flexible).  Extra hours available during school holidays.
We are looking for 2 personal care assistants to support our 15 year old son to get him out and about and assist with his personal care needs.
Our son has severe learning disabilities, communication and physical difficulties. He is mobilised in a wheelchair as he can only walk very short distances. He has been diagnosed with Epilepsy which is well maintained with medication and he also has a condition called Pica where he will pick up anything and put it in his mouth.
Our son is a happy young man who would love someone to accompany and assist him to go swimming, bowling and for walks along the seafront.  He loves playing games such as throwing and catching and is interested in push along cars.
He is also registered blind but makes very good use of the sight he does have. He is non verbal and has limited understanding and will need someone patient, who can read and respond appropriately to how he is feeling. When he gets to know someone he enjoys having the attention and builds strong relationships.
2 personal care assistants will be required to work together to meet his needs as he will require support with toileting and changing pads. As a 15 year old he is strong and will need some one who is fit and healthy to fulfil this role.
Other Requirements
• Must have a clean, UK driving licence.   
All applicants must be willing to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check
Successful applicants will be entitled to Holiday pay and will be issued employment contracts.
Typical duties
Personal Care: 
• Encouraging him to sit still when using the toilet and assist with wiping.
• Cleaning and changing pads when required.
• Support to help with transferring to and from the toilet when required.
• Assisting him to wash and dry his hands thoroughly.
• Dressing and undressing including helping with buttons and fastenings
• Support with feeding e.g. cutting up food to a small size and assistance to eat.
• Provide constant supervision whilst eating.
• Preparing drinks by mixing a thickener into his drink before giving it to him.
• Helping with other aspects of personal care as required, for example assisting to get changed at swimming pool. Assisting with showering and drying and getting in and out of the wheelchair ('transferring') as required.
• Accompany and assisting when accessing social and leisure activities, including swimming, trampolining and bowling.
• Accompanying and assisting on trips out e.g. walks along the sea front.
• The above duties will involve pushing the wheelchair when out and using the wheelchair accessible car provided;  assisting with fastening the wheel chair into the car and making sure he has his seatbelt fitted.

• Patient, possess excellent interpersonal skills and be able to read situations well

• Ideally have experience of learning disabilities, communication and physical difficulties
• Fit and healthy to undertake the required duties
• Ideally be a non smoker
• Respectful of the employer’s privacy and confidentiality
• Reliable with good time-keeping
• Able to both follow instructions and work on own initiative
• Hygienic and well organised
• Able to speak and read English to a reasonable standard
• Legally permitted to work in the United Kingdom
• Will have a clean, valid UK driving license
