Where does the money come from? A Direct Payment (DP) is a payment made to you by your local authority social services department.

What is it for? It is the budget for your health and social care support, this is known as a Personal Budget.

How does the amount of support get agreed? You will be assessed for your support needs by your local council who will then agree an amount of money for this. This is your personal budget which you can receive to manage yourself as a Direct Payment.

Why do I receive the money? The aim is to give you greater control over how your care and support is managed.

It also gives you the choice of employing your own support staff (personal assistants). Or you can choose to work with a care service where the person providing the support is employed by the service rather than you.
