Summary

  • Personal Care Assistant/Carer/Companion required to support young man to enable him to maximize his independence whilst living within his family home
  • Duties include assisting with personal care, dispensing medication, assisting with transfers from bed/wheelchair/bathroom using a hoist
  • Preparing meals and snacks
  • Assistance with light domestic tasks such as laundry, housework 
  • Duties include driving wheelchair accessible van and escorting on leisure and social activities outside the home, eg accompanying to wheelchair football, trips to the cinema
  • Applicants must be cheerful, reliable and flexible with a good sense of humour 
  • Full training will be given
  • Ability to work on own initiative when required
  • Flexibility to accompany on weekends away occasionally an advantage

Hours/Shifts

Setting up a new team of PAs to cover 7.30am to 8.30pm, seven days a week on a shift/rota basis.  Some flexibility to provide sickness/holiday cover an advantage. 

Other Requirements

Must be comfortable with pets

Must have a UK driving licence

All applicants must be willing to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check

Nature of the work:

The employer is the mum of a young man with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy who is a full-time wheelchair user and wishes to remain living within his family home.  He is looking for a team of reliable and conscientious Personal Care Assistants to enable him to maximise his independence and to support him with all aspects of his day-to-day care both at home and in the community.  

Typical duties

Domestic -    

  • Helping with laundry, washing and drying 
  • Changing bed linen
  • Bed making
  • General cleaning of bedroom/bathroom
  • Taking out rubbish
  • Preparing drinks, snacks and meals.
  • Shopping trips
  • Tidying

Personal Care:  

  • Assistance with washing and bathing/showering 
  • Hoisting from bed to wheelchair to bath
  • To be on call when employer using toilet
  • Assistance with applying cream
  • General hair/skin care
  • Assistance using a urine bottle 
  • Dressing and undressing/ helping with buttons and fastenings
  • Getting into bed
  • Assistance with getting out of bed using a hoist
  • Assistance with medication i.e. helping to take tablets from foil/packets
  • Helping with other aspects of personal care as required 
  • Assistance at mealtimes e.g. assistance to eat when required
  • Physiotherapy exercises 

Social:          

  • Driving wheelchair adapted vehicle and accompanying/assisting with shopping trips, cinema and other social activities as required
  • Accompanying employer to doctors/hospital appointments when required
  • Occasional longer journeys
  • Accompanying to social meetings eg friends, family
