Job Title: Support Worker

Hours/shifts: Variable but primarily to cover lunch and teatimes, and also to cover holidays and to work alongside my other 2 Pa’s.

• I am a 48-year-old male full time wheelchair user living Independently in East Preston with my 2 friendly dogs.
• I have a good sense of humour and looking for a support worker who enjoys a laugh. Although I am in a wheelchair I still enjoy getting out and about and I drive my own adapted motability car.
• Now lockdown is ending I want to get out to get out to the cinema, motor sports events, days out in London, seeing comedians, eating out etc.
• This position would ideally suit a local person with access to their own car due to the hours required to work.
• The hours are primarily to cover lunch and teatimes, and also to cover holidays and to work alongside my other 2 Pa’s.
• This could be for one person or a possible job share? The role is to assist me to live independently and to socialise.
• There is some personal care aspects to the role, cooking and light domestic duties. Experience is not essential as full training given, but reliability and time keeping is a MUST. If you think this role would suit you, please contact Independent Lives Recruitment.

Typical duties

Laundry, hanging out to dry, putting away
Helping with laundry, washing and drying
Loading and unloading the washing machine
Loading and unloading tumble dryer/washing line
Changing bed linen
Bed making
General cleaning
Taking out rubbish
General housework, including cleaning, dusting and vacuuming on occasion
Preparing drinks, snacks and meals.

Personal Care:
Washing and bathing/showering – towelling dry
Supervision and/or assistance with showering
Using hoist on and off shower chair as required
To be on call when employer takes shower
Assistance with applying cream
General skin care
Using the toilet
Dressing and undressing/ helping with buttons and fastenings
Getting into bed
Assistance with getting out of bed using a hoist
Assistance with medication i.e. helping to take tablets from foil/packets
Helping with other aspects of personal care as required
Getting in and out of the wheelchair ('transferring')
Mealtimes e.g. cutting up food
Using mobile hoist transferring into specialist armchair
Making sure property is secure when leaving

Accompanying and assisting employer on shopping trips when required
Accompany employer when accessing social and leisure activities cinema, shows etc
Accompanying employer to doctors/hospital appointments when required
Accompanying when clothes-buying, including help lifting clothes on/off the rails.
Occasional longer journeys
Assist with transferring in and out of adapted car
Days out in London and motorsport events, Goodwood Festival of Speed, F1 etc
Accompanying on trips out visiting friends and family
The above duties will involve lifting lightweight fixed frame wheelchair in/out of car, pushing the employer’s wheelchair when out.

The successful applicant will be:

Able to both follow instructions and work on own initiative
Hygienic, tidy minded and well organised
Fit and healthy to undertake the required duties
Patience and possess excellent interpersonal skills
Honest and cheerful
Able to speak and read English to a reasonable standard
Legally permitted to work in the United Kingdom
Able to work at all times to high standards of Health & Safety

Previous experience preferred but this is not as essential as a kind and common sense approach to these roles.
